Sea Turtle Nesting Season in Pensacola Beach, Florida: A Natural Wonder
Pensacola Beach, with its pristine white sands and clear emerald waters, is not only a haven for beachgoers but also a crucial nesting ground for several species of sea turtles. Every year, from May through October, these magnificent creatures grace our shores to lay their eggs, offering a unique opportunity to witness nature’s wonders.
Which Sea Turtles Nest Here?
Pensacola Beach primarily welcomes Loggerhead sea turtles, which constitute the majority of nesting activity. However, Green sea turtles and the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles also nest here. On rarer occasions, the massive Leatherback sea turtle may also make an appearance.
The Nesting Process:
Under the cover of darkness, female sea turtles emerge from the Gulf to find a suitable spot above the high tide line. They laboriously dig a nest in the sand with their flippers, where they deposit around 100 or more eggs. Once the eggs are laid, the mother turtle carefully covers the nest and returns to the sea, leaving her precious cargo to incubate for approximately 45 to 60 days.
Hatchling Emergence:
The culmination of this natural cycle is the magical moment when the hatchlings emerge from their sandy nests. Typically occurring at night, these tiny turtles, guided by the moon’s reflection on the water, instinctively make their way towards the Gulf. This perilous journey is fraught with danger as they face predators like crabs, seabirds, and fish.
How You Can Help Protect Sea Turtles:
As visitors and residents of Pensacola Beach, it’s our responsibility to ensure the safety and survival of these endangered creatures. Here’s how you can help:
- Go Dark at Night: Artificial lights can disorient nesting females and hatchlings, leading them away from the ocean. If you’re on the beach at night, use a red flashlight, as sea turtles are less sensitive to this color. Turn off or shield any beachfront lights and close curtains or blinds in beach-facing properties.
- Maintain a Respectful Distance: If you encounter a nesting sea turtle or hatchlings, observe them quietly from at least 30 feet away. Never touch or disturb them, and refrain from using any lights or flash photography.
- Leave No Trace: Before leaving the beach each day, remove all personal belongings like tents, chairs, and toys. Fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles to create a clear and flat path for nesting turtles and hatchlings.
- Report Sightings: If you see a sick, injured, or deceased sea turtle or hatchlings wandering away from the water, immediately contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) 24-hour hotline at 888-404-3922 or Escambia County Marine Resources at (850) 426-1257.
